Apple says iPhone Explosions did not Result from Any Device Malfunction

Various reports of iPhone and iPod Touch explosions have hit the media in the recent months.  France has just reported their second iPhone explosion case just days ago. These reports have hurt the Apple brand, putting potential iPhone buyers wary of iPhones exploding in their face.

Apple said on Friday that iPhone explosions were not caused by battery overheating as some have suggested.  After their investigations, they concluded that the iPhone screen explosions were caused by external forces.

In their own words, Apple stated,

"To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits. The iPhones with broken glass that we have analyzed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone,"

French consumer affairs minister confirm Apple’s findings, but added that the report is not final.  More tests and investigations need to be made to verify whether cracked screens were caused by internal device malfunction or man-made “external force.”

These stories of exploding iPhones may just be cases of users pressing too hard on the screen or dropping them on concrete.  It’s possible that some just wanted an excuse to get their money back.  Apple even said there was one case which the owner refused to give up their broken iPhone for inspection.

Apple’s statement should bring a peace of mind to the millions of iPhone and iPod owners around the world.  Now, iPhone users won’t have to be afraid of their iPhone exploding in their face while using it.
