Now get ready for the Invasion of the Tablets!

Remember what we said about getting ready for the invasion of the mobile apps? Well now it seems we are about to witness the invasion of the tablets! An Australian website SmartHouse is reporting that the almighty Google is working with mobile partner HTC to bring a tablet to market to compete with Apple’s (not even released yet) tablet. We have also heard of the new Joojoo tablet already pre-ordering and available as soon as February. What good are apps if you do not have big pretty places to use them? How many people lusted over the gorgeous see-through tablets featured in Avatar? Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about!
According to SmartHouse “HTC, who have been working closely with Google for the past 18 months have several working models of a touch tablet including one model, (which) is based on the new Google Chrome Operating System say sources.” Google has already whipped the mobile fanboys into a frenzy with the impending release of the Google Nexus One phone at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next weekend. Apparently the Nexus One (a reference to the Blade Runner movie’s replicant model), operating on the Android operating system, was developed by Google and HTC (a Taiwanese company) as the 2.0 version of the G1, which they seem intent on burying as a failed experiment. The G1 or the HTC Dream was, after all, not that impressive. Battery life was the biggest complaint. Anything Google puts out at this point will be an improvement.
Therefore, it remains to be seen whether any tablet built by HTC and powered by Google could directly compete with an Apple tablet. According to rumors the Google tablet will be “an Android based device which is set to be shown privately to core HTC customers (?) at the CES Show is set to incorporate new Qualcomm processors, touch technology and new software from Adobe.” Another factor in the balance is Google’s small but growing app store. Can Google compete with Apple’s products known for their purity of design and technology not to mention their prodigious app store? We are going to find out soon enough. My teenagers are already putting their orders in (to me) for an Apple tablet. The app/tablet market is set to explode in 2010, get ready!
