Steve Jobs: It’s the Most Important Thing I have Ever Done
CEO OF THE DECADE SAYS OF APPLE´S TABLET, “It’s the most important thing I have ever done.”
Techcrunch has heard this statement second and third hand from independent sources including senior Apple executives and Steve Jobs’ friends. Indeed, Steve Jobs is apparently really excited over his new creation as he said in today’s Apple earnings conference call, “The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about.”
To say that the Apple tablet is the most important thing he’s ever done will only add to the expectation and hype of this Wednesday’s Apple event. Yes, we know that the new tablet will probably change print publishing, but is there more to it? How else will it revolutionize our world?
Less than two days before the arrival of the most anticipated Apple product since the iPhone and we are treated to this newest bit of hype. Steve Jobs, the man who not only saved Apple upon his return to the company, but has transformed it into a company worth nearly that of Google.
To put into perspective what the Apple of 1997 represented and what Apple is doing today you must look at the numbers. Apple was losing nearly a billion dollars annually with sales and other revenue streams mired around 7 billion. A company that was valued at a mere 4 billion dollars compared to HP which at the time was worth more than 65 billion.
Today’s Apple by contrast is valued at over 180 billion dollars while HP is valued at a mere 120. Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones, 3.36 million computers, and 21 million iPods THIS QUARTER.
The financials speak for themselves.
But that is not all Steve Jobs has done.
- The iPod and iTunes Store changed the music industry and revolutionized the hardware we use, the iPod, in an already saturated mp3 player market.
- Took on Microsoft head on and in many ways has won. In a day and age when everyone used a PC he said enough and forced companies to work with him.
- Brought style, aesthetics, and dare I say sexiness to the hardware we use.
- The iPhone is the computer I use the most each day, that’s right my iPhone. While Android and Blackberries have certainly improved, they did so only in a game of catch-up.
This is but a short, short, list but to hear Steve Jobs say that Apple´s Tablet is the most important thing he has ever done it is impossible not to believe him. I didn’t want an iPhone but now couldn’t live without it. I will no doubt leave my skepticism at home and rush to the Apple Store when the tablet begins shipping.
