Twitter gets a New and Improved Mobile Web Interface
It looks like Twitter is finally revamping its mobile website. The current Twitter mobile site at twitter.com is just so bland and boring. It is very limited in terms of functionality. No direct messages, favorites, and twitter search. The new mobile interface at mobile.twitter.com is much more user friendly and pleasing to the eyes. Mentions, favorites, direct messages are all placed near the top with a bigger box for entering your tweets.
This is what Leland Rechis at the user experience team have to say about their new design.
“What may be a less known fact is: Lots of people access Twitter on their phones via our good ol’ mobile website, and trusty ‘m’ has been delivering tweets faithfully. However, ‘m’ doesn’t fully feel like Twitter, and could probably do a bit more things for you.
‘M’ should also be fantastically innovative — naturally the best way to do that is use our own APIs. So, the mobile team here built a brand new mobile web client from scratch, using only Twitter APIs, and we’d like to share the results with you.”
Well, the new user interface will sure please a lot of those still using the twitter mobile site for their tweets. But even the new interface still lacks some of the features paid tweeter apps offer. Geotagging and list functions are just some new features rolled out by Tweetie 2 (iTunes Link). What about the push notifications of tweets made possible by Boxcar (iTunes Link) and IM+ (iTunes Link)?
As of now twitter.com still links to the old mobile interface. So to test out the new mobile Twitter, be sure to go to mobile.twitter.com for the test drive.
