The original GeoDefense is ranked up there as one of the best Tower Defense games on the iPhone.  With GeoDefense Swarm (iTunes Link), the thinking man’s tower defense game gets even better.  Unlike other tower defense games, GeoDefense Swarm offers lots of maps and levels for the avid tower defense player.  GeoDefense Swarm offers a total of 30 levels, each with its own map.  The 30 levels are divided in into three difficulties:  easy, medium, and hard, with each difficulty getting 10 unique maps.  Players must think very carefully before placing their towers, as the game is extremely hard to beat when playing  on the default hard difficulty. Users must evaluate each level’s map and choose a build strategy based on the level’s layout.

Like most tower defense games, players build towers to destroy enemy creeps and prevent them from reaching the exit.  In open field tower defense games like GeoDefense Swarm, players also try to build mazes by building towers for the creeps to travel along.  Players gain money to build more towers by destroying the creeps.  The creeps usually travel in waves, with each wave the creeps gets stronger and tougher.

Like its predecessor, GeoDefense Swarm uses vector based graphics.  The result is impressive.  Fireworks explode all over the screen as creeps get destroyed.  It can get so dazzling  that it obstruct the user’s focus to prevent creeps from escaping to the exit.  Unlike its predecessor, however, GeoDefense Swarm now offers obstacle-laden open maps instead of a predefined path.  This makes a lot of room for strategic and creative thinking.  In most levels, placing towers on maps is almost puzzle-like as placing them in certain grids or in specific patterns may be the only way to win. The endless mode feature lacking in the original GeoDefense now appears in Swarm.  The last level of each difficulty is the endless mode, making it three endless tower defense levels in all.

GeoDenfense’s diversity of levels make the game extremely challenging and fun.  As the player progress through the game, he will encounter new special zones that can heal or speed up creeps.  There are also a total of 6 towers for blasting those enemy creeps. In Swarm, the new tower Thumper damages enemies around it by shock wave.  The conventional blaster, laser, missile, and enemy decelerator are also available. There are even towers that can only be used once as a savior tower to destroy all the creeps around it all at once.

Lots of levels and maps is good.  However, it is the gameplay that make GeoDense an extremely fun game.  Conventional players are expected to play most levels countless times in order to beat it. In Geodefense Swarm, the action is almost non-stop.  Players need to continue to build or upgrade towers with each enemy waves.  Otherwise the enemies can get so strong that they just breeze to the exit.  When players lose a level, they need to reevaluate their mistakes and come up with a new strategy to destroy all the creeps.

Most players should be able to beat all the easy levels.  That said, some levels are still challenging enough that it may take some people 5 to 10 times to beat it.  At the medium level, the difficulty really ramps up and some folks may never beat another level unless they get some tips from the experts.  If players can pass all the levels, they can aim for the higher scores by letting the fewer creeps escape to the exit or by destroying the creeps near the exit.  Open Feint integration allows players to compete globally for the highest scores.  Get the recognition of being the best player in the world for one of the most difficult tower defense game in the App Store.

The tough challenge may upset some players.  GeoDefense Swarm may be the toughest tower defense game in the App Store.  Players who buy this game for some fun tower defense action may get turned off after losing a level after 10+ tries.  The visuals also may not please everyone.  Some of us prefers cute animals or ferociously animated zombies instead of geometrical shaped creeps throwing themselves at you.  GeoDefense Swarm also lacks game music.  Hearing the blaster firing and creep explosion for hours can give some players a headache.

Despite its minor flaws, GeoDefense Swarm is a great tower defense game.  It is ranked up there as one of the best iPhone tower defense games.  With 30 challenging levels, players can easily spend days to “attempt” to complete the game.  Currently for just 99 cents in the App Store (iTunes Link), it is a must-own game for iPhone tower defense fan.

Tap Defense, the popular free iPhone tower defense game, has been consistently adding new maps and game modes over the past year. But until now, there has been no implementation of new towers for the game. Recently Tapjoy added an update for Tap Defense for new towers.  Unlike previous updates, the new towers need to be unlocked.  New towers can be unlocked by downloading other iPhone apps.  Most of these iPhone apps are paid apps at 99 cents each.  Luckily right now there are two free apps that players can download to unlock the two new towers. 

The two new towers are the Booster tower and War Ship tower.  War Ship towers are effective on maps with lots of water.  Water will no longer be a safe spot for the charging demons.  Your War ship towers act like floating bomb towers, able to blast through crowds of enemies as they traverse through watery areas.  But it is the Booster towers that make the game very unbalanced.  Booster towers can boost your tower’s damage strength.  When fully upgraded, the booster towers can double the attack strength of your towers.  Even the Storm towers can double its damage to 50% when Booster tower and Storm tower are fully upgraded.  What’s more, Booster tower is relatively cheap to build, making it easy to double your towers attack strength. 

Adding the Booster tower is like building two offensive towers in one square.  This can make the game incredibly easy.  At the end of a game, the player can easily have over 1 million gold pieces left playing on a classic game mode.  High scores will need to be rewritten with these two new towers addition. 

Perhaps developers intend for these towers to be used as “cheats” since they need to be unlocked.  However, new tower additions should be added with caution.  They should be thoroughly tested as they should add new and enhanced game play experience to players.  I would imagine that developers will be updating Tap Defense for better game balance in the future.  For now, if you find Tap Defense too easy with these towers, either don’t use them, or play them on an especially difficult game mode such as the ten towers or sudden death. 

Final Fantasy: Crystal Defenders has arrived for the iPhone/iPod in the App store just in time for Christmas. There are demo version and full version available. The demo version is getting poor user reviews primarily because of poor user interface. The primary game screen consists of a huge virtual keypad and the tiny game screen, each taking half of screen space on the iPhone. Although players can tilt the iPhone game screen to landscape mode and get a larger game screen, they can’t add defenders or level up defenders while in the landscape mode. It is awkward to be tilting the iPhone back and forth just to play the game. The demo also only allows for 3 job classes. That makes the demo substantially less enjoyable.

Aside from the poor user interface. Crystal Defenders really is a good Tower Defense game with familiar Final Fantasy characteristics. When combined with a maximum of 8 job classes in a single game, killing those Final Fantasy monsters can be a lot of fun. Soldiers and Monks run around their posts inflicting damage to monsters while thieves join the fray by pillaging fallen enemies for twice the usual gil (gold). Dragoons, Black mages, Time mages, Archers, and other also aid in your task preventing those pesky monsters from getting to the other side. Finally, if those monsters are a little too much, unleash the summons to eliminate those monsters.

There are 3 different play modes in Crystal Defenders, each mode gives you additional maps, jobs, options, and summons. Each map has an easy and an advanced version. In W2 and W3 mode, the ability to use field crystals is added. Those crystals can add attack strength, range, or speed to neighboring defenders.

Crystal Defenders is a fun and challenging game. A fine addition to the Tower Defense category. However, the developers at SquareEnix really should be learning about optimal iPhone user interface for games. Staring at the tiny game screen for so long may make someone go blind! If SquareEnix doesn’t want lawsuits coming their way, fix the tiny gameplay screen and the big virtual keypad! Tap Defense and Fieldrunners are great iPhone tower defense games with excellent user interface! SquareEnix can take a few design lessons from them.

Have you heard of the popular computer mini game Tower Defense? Now thousands of iPhone users are enjoying this fun strategy game free. It was once ranked number one on the Top 25 Free App list in the Apps Store. Here, we will introduce the game along with some tap defense strategies.

The ratings are high as the game is extremely fun. The goal of the game is to prevent monsters from reaching the Gate of Heaven. If 20 monsters reach Heaven, the game ends. Players feel a great sense of accomplishment as all monsters in a level are destroyed by well-positioned towers. The urge to save money to earn high interest and the need to build towers to topple the ascending enemies constantly force the player to make difficult decisions. Spend the money to build an expensive tower now can cost you 4 of the same tower if you could just wait a few more stages. However, if you don’t build defensive towers promptly, be prepared to let those monsters reach the forbidden gate.

Even though it only has three maps, the replay value of the game is high as players can try different ways to achieve high score every time he or she plays. It is one of those games that is a must have for iPhone users. It can be played for months, and some people probably would never get sick of it.

Here’s a little tip and additional tap defense strategy for those stuck on the later levels. Build lots of Ice Towers. They will slow the goons down, so almost ALL the monsters get slowed down while your towers pound them with arrows, magic, bombs, etc. Also make sure you save money early and accumulate interests. You can get 300 gold or more in interest rate if you have enough cash on hand and researched interest rates. In later stages, try to build one or two storm towers and update them to take out 25 percent of enemy’s life with a single shot. If you plan your towers well and save enough money, taking out all the monsters in any difficult setting would not be impossible!

On Tap Defense scoring, it seems to be based on the amount of money accumulated as well as the number of monsters that has reached the Gates of Heaven. See you at the top of the score board.

Square Enix is releasing its first iPhone game this winter in Japan. The full name is Crystal Defenders. From its screen shots and its name “Crystal Defenders,” it looks that Crystal Defenders is a Final Fantasy game similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and Tower Defense with touchscreen action. Looks like Square Enix has the right combination for its first iPhone game. What can go wrong with the combination of the most popular strategy games on the world’s most popular phone!
